LG Arts Center Seoul stands as a new landmark in Magok, positioned at the intersection of art, science, nature, and civic life. Beyond serving as a venue for performance, it aspires to be a public platform that connects the city with its people, introducing the contemporary flow of performing arts while supporting creative activity. Within this framework, the café functions as an essential pause—an in-between space where visitors can extend their architectural experience before and after performances.
안도 다다오가 아트센터를 설계하면서 이야기한 “진정 소중히 간직되는 건축물은 항상 높은 공공성을 지닌다.” 라는 말처럼 이 카페공간 또한 건축의 일부로서 아트센터를 이용하는 이 뿐만 아니라 누구나 편하게 이용할 수 있는 장소로서 기능하길 바랐고, 이를 위해 건물에서 카페의 영역까지 Seamless Transition, 자연스러운 휴식으로의 전환이 이루어지도록 계획했다.
As Tadao Ando once stated while designing the art center, “Architecture that is truly cherished always carries a high degree of publicness.” In the same spirit, this café was envisioned not merely as an annex to the building but as a place open to anyone—not only visitors of the art center. To achieve this, the spatial sequence was designed as a seamless transition from the architecture into the café, enabling visitors to move effortlessly into a state of rest and comfort.
기존 카페는 높은 벽체와 불규칙한 좌석 배치로 인해 아트리움과 식물원의 경관이 단절되고, 대기 고객을 수용하기 어려운 동선 문제를 드러냈다. 이러한 한계는 건축이 지닌 개방성과 흐름을 온전히 담아내지 못한 채, 관객의 경험을 한정된 틀 안에 머무르게 했다.
The former café revealed certain limitations: tall partitions and irregular seating layouts severed views toward the atrium and botanical garden, while circulation proved insufficient to accommodate waiting visitors. These conditions restricted the sense of openness and fluidity inherent in the building, narrowing the audience’s experience into confined boundaries.
stof는 ‘Aligned Objects / Bent Boundary / Void’라는 개념을 바탕으로, LG아트센터의 조형 언어 ‘타원, 직선, 경사의 기울기‘를 카페 공간 안에서 다시 해석했다. 직선은 건축적 축과 맞물리며 공공 가구의 질서를 만들고, 곡선과 원형의 경계는 영역성을 부여해 흐름을 확장한다. 두 조형이 교차하며 생겨난 ‘보이드’는 단절된 벽 대신 열린 시선을 제공하며, 카페를 하나의 박스형 테넌트가 아닌 건축과 호흡하는 공간으로 전환시킨다.
Guided by the concept of “Aligned Objects / Bent Boundary / Void,” stof reinterpreted the formal language of the Arts Center—its ellipses, straight lines, and angled slopes—within the café. Straight lines align with architectural axes to establish order among public furnishings, while curves and circular boundaries expand spatial flow and define new zones. The voids generated where these geometries intersect dissolve rigid partitions, opening new perspectives and transforming the café into a space that breathes with the architecture, rather than standing apart as a boxed tenant.
LG아트센터의 건축적 맥락은 카페 공간에 고스란히 이어진다. 빛과 구조, 선과 곡선의 긴장 관계 속에서 카페는 단순한 부속 시설을 넘어 건축의 철학을 일상적 경험으로 확장하는 매개체로 기능한다.
이러한 레이아웃은 카페와 아트리움, 그리고 서울 식물원으로 이어지는 수평•수직적 연결을 회복시킨다. 곡선의 흐름은 벽을 허물고, 새롭게 조성된 타원형의 경계는 카페가 전체 공용부 속에서 자연스럽게 어우러지도록 계획했다. 그 안에서 다양한 좌석 타입과 유기적인 동선은 공연 전후의 웨이팅 시간을 문화 경험의 연장선으로 바꾸어 놓는다.
The architectural context of the Art Center—designed by world-renowned architect Tadao Ando—carries seamlessly into the café. Within its interplay of light and structure, of line and curve, the café functions not as a subsidiary amenity but as a medium that translates architectural philosophy into everyday experience.
This reconfiguration restores both horizontal and vertical connections between the café, the atrium, and the Seoul Botanic Garden. Curved flows dissolve walls, while the newly introduced elliptical boundary allows the café to integrate naturally into the larger public domain. Within it, diverse seating types and fluid circulation transform pre- and post-performance waiting time into an extension of cultural experience.
코펠라는 단순한 휴식처가 아니라, 건축적 언어를 일상 속 경험으로 전환하는 장치다. 방문객은 이곳에서 공연을 기다리는 시간을 단순히 소비하지 않고, 건축이 지닌 개방성과 유연성을 체험한다. 그것은 결국 LG아트센터가 지향하는 가치 ‘도시와 사람을 연결하는 열린 문화 플랫폼’을 카페라는 친밀한 스케일 안에서 구현한 결과이기도 하다. 카페에서의 짧은 시간이 관객들에게 또 다른 문화적 여운으로 이어지기를 바란다.
