옛 골목 깊숙히 전통 가옥들 사이에 있는 오래된 한옥을 디자인 스튜디오 stof에서 현대적으로 재해석하여 커피 쇼룸으로 설계하였다.
Among the traditional houses inside the old alley, a Korean design studio stof designed a coffee showroom by reinterpreting the hanok in a modern way.
인사동은 오랜 역사 속에서 갤러리, 공예, 찻집이 공존하며 서울의 전통적 정체성을 대표해온 지역이다. ‘세루리안(Cerulean)’은 이러한 맥락에 맞추어, 브랜드가 한옥에 자연스럽게 스며들며 커피와 사람에 집중할 수 있는 공간을 목표로 하였다.
stof은 Cerulean의 ‘하늘색’을 단순한 색채로 정의하지 않았다. 페인트로 칠해진 인위적 색이 아닌 계절과 시간에 따라 변화하는 진짜 하늘의 색이어야 한다고 생각했고, 이에 인사동의 푸른 하늘을 천장 대신 들여오는 방식을 선택했다. 그 결과 방문객은 공간 어디서든 하늘을 올려다볼 수 있다. 색을 과감히 덜어낸 대신, 먹의 농담과 붓의 흐름만으로 풍경을 표현하는 수묵화처럼, 재료의 질감과 빛에 의해 생기는 그림자가 공간을 채운다. 오롯이 하늘색만 존재하는 공간을 구현한 것이다.
Located in Insadong—an area recognized as one of Seoul’s most representative traditional districts with its long-standing galleries, craft shops, and teahouses—Cerulean integrates its brand identity into the Hanok while creating a space centered on coffee and people.
stof interpreted the “cerulean blue” not as a painted artificial color, but as the real sky that changes with time and seasons. The ceiling was therefore replaced with open views to the sky above Insadong, allowing visitors to experience the sky from anywhere inside the café. Rather than relying on added colors, the space is composed through shadows cast by materials and structural forms, much like the tonal expressions found in ink-wash paintings. The aim was to construct an environment where the sky becomes the only color.
공간은 바리스타가 커피를 내리는 신옥 영역과 손님이 머물 수 있는 전통 한옥 공간으로 나뉘며, 두 영역 사이에는 마당이 놓여 있다. 진입부인 신옥에는 음악 없이 커피 향과 대화 소리, 자연광만 존재한다. stof은 천창과 마당을 통해 가을에는 낙엽이 떨어지고, 겨울에는 눈이 쌓이는 모습을 바라보는 경험을 기대했다.
The layout consists of two main zones: a newly built structure housing the barista station and a traditional Hanok for seating, with a courtyard positioned in between. In the new building—serving as the primary entrance—no music is introduced; only the aroma of coffee, the sound of conversation, and natural light define the atmosphere. Through skylights and the courtyard, seasonal phenomena—falling leaves in autumn, snow accumulation in winter—become part of the spatial experience.
마당을 지나 도착하는 전통 한옥 공간의 긴 좌석에 앉으면 자연스럽게 시선이 바깥을 향하며, 낮춘 실내 조도 덕분에 하늘과 마당이 더욱 중심에 놓인다. 전체적으로 간접조명을 사용해 잔잔한 분위기를 연출했으며, stof이 디자인한 플로어 조명은 상단 플레이트의 각도에 따라 빛의 방향이 달라지는 구조다. 이는 장식에 따라 그림자가 달라지던 한국 전통 촛대에서 영감을 얻었다.
In the Hanok seating area, elongated seating along the perimeter directs views toward the courtyard and sky. The interior lighting is intentionally subdued to naturally draw attention outward. Indirect lighting is used throughout to create a calm and understated ambiance. Floor lamps designed by stof feature adjustable light direction through the angled top plate, a reinterpretation of the traditional Korean candlestick, where the shadow changes depending on decorative elements placed behind the flame.
마당은 바닥부터 벽까지 포천석으로 마감해 미니멀한 분위기를 만들었고, 마당이라는 장소적 특성상 물이 모이도록 바닥에 경사가 필요하지만 배수 시설을 모두 숨기고 데크 시스템을 사용해 평탄한 석재 마감을 완성했다. 실내와 동일한 레벨과 재질로 마감하여 경계 없이 이어지는 공간감을 실현하였다.
The courtyard is finished entirely with Pocheon stone in a minimal composition. As Hanok courtyards naturally collect water, the floor typically requires a slope, but drainage systems were concealed and a decking system was introduced beneath the stone finish to achieve a perfectly flat surface. This continuity in material and level enables the indoors and outdoors to connect seamlessly as one.
